As I am getting ready for baby No. 2 and going through everything we already have, I realized the ridiculous amount of things I got to prepare for Genevieve that still, after over a year, have not left the package. Out of all of the gifts we got and things we bought we have probably used half. So here is a list of things that I never used in Genevieve’s first year.
Disclaimer: These are the things that I personally did not find useful during Genevieve’s first year. Some moms find these things to be lifesavers. But each baby is different with different needs.
Maybe it’s good to have a few on hand just in case you have one of those babies that love being swaddled. But Genevieve hated being swaddled so we never used them, and I have heard this from a number of other mamas that their babies hated being swaddled. Like I said, have some on hand just in case, but there is a 50/50 chance your baby will hate being swaddled.
We found that Genevieve preferred sleep sacks instead. These are great because they allow you to swaddle your baby if they like it, but you can also wrap them so that they have their arms out. Here are some of our favorites!
We were so ambitious. Cloth diapers save you money and the environment so why wouldn’t you use them, right? We loaded up on cloth diapers before Genevieve was born. But listen, cloth diapers are a lot of work. I wasn’t able to take that on on top of working from home and learning to take care of a newborn while maintaining my mental and physical wellness. If you are up to the task then I applaud you and wish I was as able, but don’t feel like its something that you need.
If you decide not to use cloth diapers, look into subscribing to diapers through Prime! I have a monthly subscription for Love’s diapers and it’s the cheapest option I have found for disposable diapers. Plus they are delivered as often as you’d like so you don’t need to worry about running out!
Baby Food Maker
Yet another one of my ambitions. Realistically, a baby food maker is a blender. Just use your regular/ immersion blender. Seriously.
Pack n’ Play
I know that there are a lot of parents that have found their Pack n’ Play so useful, but we have maybe used ours once. I am thinking (hoping) it will be more useful with 2 babies, but every time I put Genevieve in her’s, whether for a nap or play time, she would cry to get out and run her head into the mesh siding. I found a baby gate to be much more useful for us because I could keep her contained in the most baby proofed room in our apartment while I get work done.
I will say that it is useful as a travel crib, we just chose to take a portable bassinet (like this one) with us while we traveled because it is so much easier to transport.
Maybe we just bought a sucky one, but because our little Corolla doesn’t have adjustable headrests in the back seat, we weren’t able to adjust the mirror to ever actually see her.
I am sure from your baby’s perspective using a warm wipe is nice, but it definitely is not necessary. We barely used ours.
I hope you found this helpful!
